In my memory, Windows 95B was the most performant and stable version of the operating system back then. Perfectly suited for a hybrid PC for DOS and Windows 95 games. However, I was a bit surprised when I checked the conventional memory in MS-DOS mode: the free available memory was way too low.
So I swapped out the keyboard, mouse, and CD-ROM drivers, configured HIMEM.SYS and EMM386, and tested it again. During this, I noticed immediately that HIMEM consumes a whopping 44kb of conventional memory. A quick check with my Windows 95C PC revealed that it actually should only be 1-2kb. As it turns out, this is a bug in foreign Windows 95B versions that can be fixed with a small patch. After the installation and a reboot, the memory usage was back within the normal range.
